Soft Animal of Your Body
One of my favorite poems is “Wild Geese” by May Oliver. I particularly love the opening line of the poem, which goes:
“You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees,
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
Love what it loves.” - Mary Oliver
As someone who has been consistently fascinated by movement throughout my life, and restoring health to the physical body, I find this suggestion by Mary Oliver revolutionary.
What and where is the soft and animal part of ourselves? What do we feel that is beyond striving? When we release ourselves from the carrot and stick nature of our adult lives, of our adult fitness regimens, what are the messages we are receiving from our bodies? What do they love?
