"The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear."-Rumi
Back in 2004 I was swirling from one thing to the next. I was well into the second year of my DPT program, and mid way through a clinical at an inpatient neuro rehab. The moment my rotation ended, I was heading out of the country to travel to visit a friend who was abroad. I was worried about my vaccinations for the trip, getting my passport and money in order, as well as finishing my 40 hour + per week clinical and inservice.
One rainy morning, as I was driving into the hospital, I was rear-ended by a car behind me. Thankfully, the damage was so minimal, no report needed to be filed. But it made me late for my 7:30 am start. I ran up to the hospital from the parking garage, and landed in the meeting room just as the rehab team was coming together for a morning check in. I was rushing and going a million miles a minute, and I slipped off the back of the rolly stool I tried to fly onto. I landed ungracefully with a thud on my butt in front of everyone in the meeting room. My clinical instructor was this fantastic, skillful, older therapist. She asked someone to take notes and gently excused us from the meeting. She sat in the hall with me and had me take deep breaths with her. My breath gently called my mind back to the present moment and I was able to have a great day- one in which I was able to set aside my worries and to be present for our clients.
So often, our thoughts focus on our to do list- our work tasks, our grocery lists, stressful conversations we've had- all may replay in our head. All of these thoughts swirl around, crowding the natural spaciousness of our minds. When that happens, we become disconnected from our natural easeful state and out of touch with the felt sense of our body. Join us as we explore interoception- listening and sensing into the body. Feeling into the body is a necessary skill for preserving physical balance, for reducing injuries as you participate in exercise programs and for being present in our life to be with the people we love. Thank you so much for practicing with us.
